Capsicum annum is the botanical species that includes almost all of the domesticated edible pepper plants, hot as well as sweet. While “annum” means “annual”, these plants are not actually annuals, though we grow them that way in our Central Virginia climate. This plant was sold at the local Wegman’s as a dwarf ornamental, with a warning not to consume the peppers. Of course if you like hot food, the peppers are in fact a delicious and spicy consumable. After investing in some energy efficient LED plant lights for the basement I’ve kept it outside during the warm season and under lights during the (increasingly shorter) winter. This pepper is in its 3d year and beginning to look somewhat “bonsaified”. Sixteen ounce can of delicious double IPA included for scale.
